Shortly after wrapping up a series of work with slime molds, this series marched itself onto my studio tables. Its emergence surprised me, as did the mood swing it brought. Usually, I can feel a sense of camaraderie in the studio, even if I am unaware of who the specific collaborator is. Making these sculptures felt strangely physical and somewhat non-relational. I used materials I hadn’t used before—rubber cement, chalk dust—and worked with ink in ways I hadn’t attempted previously. I felt like I was exploring strange and reticent lands.
